Chiropractic is the ultimate blend of health science, art and philosophy

There is no way I wanted to be referred to as a "Quack", so, I admit, I contemplated becoming a medical doctor for a time. But then I learned what "quack" actually meant and I rapidly changed my tune. Chiropractic is the ultimate blend of health science, art and philosophy. This blend is essential if you want the most from your body.

Chiropractic Helped Me Recover After A Rugby Injury

How did I become a Chiropractor....hhmmmm..... well, my previous career was as a professional rugby player. Half way through my first contract I sustained a cruciate ligament tear that should have ended my career. Post surgical recovery time for an injury of that type was about seven and a half months. Chiropractic helped me recover to full fitness in just four months. That speaks for itself. Needless to say I enrolled in Chiropractic College shortly after my second contract and have been serving people with my head, heart and hands ever since.

I received my Bachelors of Science in Psychology from the University of Victoria in Canada which really paved my way to discovering Chiropractic. I had this amazing exercise physiology professor named Dr. Howie Wenger. He was the Exercise Physiologist for the New York Rangers, LA Kings and personal Exercise Physiologist to Wayne Gretzky. He really showed me how powerful the human body was at adapting to its environment, especially under the stress of high level athletics. From this foundation of knowledge it became apparent that Chiropractic was the only choice if I was to become a health care provider.

Chiropractic Education

I started my Chiropractic Education at Life Chiropractic College in Atlanta Georgia, home of Dr. Sid Williams, President and Founder of Life College. What an amazing school. I will admit that the reason I went to Life was due to the scholarships the school supplied for rugby players. I didn't realize that on top of being able to play in the highest club level of rugby in the nation, I was exposed to an amazing education, faculty and campus. What really peaked my interest was the Sports Chiropractic Department which was run by my mentors, Dr. Keith Rau, Dr. John Downs and Dr. Marni Capes; thanks you three. This was a top notch Chiropractic College that scholarshipped rugby in the USA where sports like football, baseball and basketball reign supreme...very weird. But, it all came to an end when I had to transfer Schools to Palmer Chiropractic College in Iowa because of an accreditation issue that Life was undergoing. What could have been a terrible set back turned out to be yet another amazing experience. I was in the hands of Guy Reikman, President of Palmer, my mentor and now friend. What an amazing education I received at both institutions: but, Palmer is where I finished up.

Chiropractic Practice Philosophy

My practice philosophy is simple, the body is programmed to be healthy not sick. My job is to support that program by providing exceptional chiropractic care, a wonderful healing environment, complete education and loyal service that allows practice members to achieve the most from their body’s and their lives. I also owe it to you to know when I need help from other resources. That is why I am committed to my group of fellow Health and Wellness providers who support me in providing care for which I cannot provide alone. So, expect to interact with my colleagues who include Acupuncturists, Massage Therapists, Personal Development Coaches, Counsellors, Naturopaths and other healers.

My practice really resonates with those who are truly involved in their health, who are active and who constantly strive to squeeze every last drop from themselves. I know I can't care about someone’s health more than he or she does , but I will come close.

Outside My Practice

I love the outdoors. Climbing, hiking, skiing, kayaking, camping and pretty much anything done outside are activities that rank high on my to do list. My wife, Marisa, and I do as much as we can to live consistently with the laws of nature.

I really owe my success to my parents who, by the way, are English, so don't hold that against them. Just to clarify, I am Canadian. I must admit that there is a slight identity crisis that occurs in our family. You haven't lived unless you say "eh" over a pot of tea and a plate of crumpets. My folks are immigrants who moved to Canada, via a transatlantic steamship ride in order to provide a better life for my brother and me. What courage they must have had. It's not like they hopped on the next available flight and a few hours later walked off the plane in another country. I think there is a particular carpe diem philosophy that results when you are the child of immigrants. I really try to live consistently with that idea.

I cannot lead people to better health, wellness and potential without living that way myself. That is called in-congruency! So, my lifestyle is reflective of that. I will not suggest something to a practice member that I haven't tried or done myself. Again, I re-iterate that the body is designed to be healthy as long as we listen to its calling to live within the laws of nature. To borrow a phrase from my friend and mentor Dr. James Chestnut, we must eat well, think well and move well. If we provide sufficiency and purity to the body/mind/spirit and diminish deficiency and toxicity, I will bet the farm that the body/mind/spirit will do the rest.

I ask you this, is there anything more important than your health and the health of your family? I can't wait to explore this question with you when you schedule for your first visit. Call our clinic today!

Dr. Penaluna Asks some important questions of interest to North Seattle residents - Chiropractor North Seattle Dr. Penaluna Asks...

Why does chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works because your nervous system, consisting of your brain, spinal cord and all the nerves of your body, controls and regulates every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. A chiropractor locates and reduces areas of nervous system compromise (usually along the spine) so your capacity to heal is restored. Chiropractic works by helping your body work as it was designed.
Where do most North Seattle residents get their first subluxation?
Being born in a hospital is a common source of subluxation. Trauma from forceps delivery has been replaced with drugs, vacuum extraction, Cesarean section and births that are "scheduled" to fit the workweek routines of Ob-Gyns. That's why we recommend a chiropractic checkup for every North Seattle newborn.
